Altberg manufacture traditional motorcycle boots at their boot factory in Richmond, North Yorkshire - they have been making motorcycle boots there since 1989. The first motorcycle boots that they manufactured were for the police motorcyclists and they were known as snobo boots or Goldtop boots.

The distributor for these motorcycle boots was Godfreys of Hull and they had been supplying Goldtop motorcycle boots to the police for two generations. The Goldtop motorcycle boot was a classic british motorcycle boot designed along classic british boot lines - full chrome leather and a choice of either rear or side zip fastening. This is still the chosen motorbike boot style for motorcycle escort duties and state visits. By 1985 the requirements for police motorcycle boots was changing and more practical everyday motorbike boots were needed - this is where the snobo motorcycle boots found their forst niche. A number of other bootmakers also changed their motorcycle boot designs to suit this now market requirement. - Daytona boots were an excellent example. The Daytona motorcycle boot was made from supple leathers and had a breathable waterproof membrane - Daytona boots were innovative in their design with wide "wrap around" calf straps which allowed the motorcycle boot to have good calf adjustment as well as sealing the top of the motorbike boot to give some resistance to the ingress of water. Another development of daytona boots was a motorcycle boot within a motorcycle boot with zips on both the inside and the outside of this new daytona boot development. Altberg who had been making snobo motorcycle boots and Goldtop motorcycle boots - both traditional English motorbike boots were inspired by these new innovative designs from companies like - Daytona boots, Sidi boots and Alpine Stars - and they then developed their new motorcycle boots range to incorporate the best of the new motorbike boot technology whilst retaining all that was best in their traditional motorcycle boots. The result was the Altberg clubman motorcycle boot range. Two styles, the Clubman Classic and the Clubman Roadster, were recognised as two excellent everyday motorbike boots and sales to police motorcyclists increased over the next five years. Motorcycle despatch riders, serious touring motorcyclists and many others who ride their motorbikes all year round became converts - in 1997 - the Clubman Classic and the Clubman Roadster motorcycle boots became the first british motorcycle boots to be awarded CE certification for road use.

Many Altberg boots are sold to riders of BMW motorcycles and Moto Guzzi motorcycles - these riders appreciate good gear and many tour extensively every year. Another group of motocyclists with whom Altberg is pleased to be associated is the BMF - the British Motorcyclists Federation. As well as doing a great service for BMF members - the British Motorcyclists Association also lobbies for changes in legislation and does a good deal of work for charities. It is partly due to the efforts of the BMF and BMW motorcyclists that the public perception of motorcyclists has changed in recent years. The BMF is an excellent organisation.

Altberg do not sell their boots through Hien Gerike or any retailer - Altberg are a small british motorcycle boot manufactuere and all of their production is sold directly to motorcyclists.
