MOTOR CYCLE BOOT FITTING AT THE FACTORY

Fitting motor cycle boots for foot length and width is the same as for walking/military boots - however with motor cycle boots other measurements around the instep and leg must also be considered.

Altberg motor cycle boot fitting
Foot length and circumference are measured in the usual way.
Altberg motor cycle boot fitting
The height of the instep is usually assessed.
Altberg motor cycle boot fitting
A high instep may make it difficult or impossible to get the foot "around the corner" into the boot.
Altberg motor cycle boot fitting
A low instep which goes too easily into the boot may leave too much room above the instep once the boot is on.
Altberg motor cycle boot fitting
Alt-berg motor cycle boots are normally "made to order" so changes can be made during manufacture to accommodate high or low insteps.

The boot instep can be adjusted at the factory after the boot is made - this is sometimes done at final boot fitting as the customer tries the boot on.

The calf closure is assessed. On velcro fastening boots always fasten the second from the bottom strap first - snugly around the ankle then fasten the others working from the 2nd strap downwards then upwards.

On zip closure boots use finger & thumb of one hand to nip the zip together at first fastening. Follow up with zip - as boots get worn in zip fastening gets easier.

If the calf fitting is too big or too small, then the calf will be measured at the height given on the boot leg chart.
Altberg motor cycle boot fitting
The measurements are taken from the ground up including the boot heel. The customer must inform us if he will be wearing leathers inside or outside the boot leg.
Altberg motor cycle boot fitting
A hand cut boot leg can be made to the measurements taken. There is an extra charge for hand cutting - see price guide.
Altberg motor cycle boot fitting
Factory fitting is always required for non standard boots - and this includes hand cut boot legs.

Toe depth - Alt-berg boots are more substantial and have deeper toes than most other makes of boot. It can sometimes be necessary to make a slight adjustment to gear lever height to accommodate this.
NOTE:
There are extra charges for any extra work we may do during manufacture (instep adjustments / hand cut boot legs etc.)
Bootmaker
"Alt-berg motor cycle boots are more substantial and use thicker leathers than most other makes of "road boots". Our boots are not "soft bendy boots" and the customer is advised to take account of this when deciding whether or not to purchase.
"Alt-berg boots normally require a period of "walking or riding in" and it can take a little time to get used to the "feel" of the boot when changing gears.
"About twenty years ago I was at Oliver's Mount near Scarborough for a days racing...it had been raining...I was wearing a pair of bike boots that I'd bought a few years previously - they looked good - sliders, fancy fluorescent bits and 'Robocop' type armouring but the soles were smooth...they were more bendy than a pair of carpet slippers. The result was I spent most of the day on my backside - I managed to get down the grassy banks to the trackside but I couldn't get back up again...in the end I had to take the boots off...and when I looked around everyone else was doing the same. The following week I made myself my first pair of Hogg boots based on the hiking boots we manufactured.
"I called them Hoggs because when my wife first saw them and I explained why I'd made them she commented - 'well at least from now on you won't come home from the Mount looking like a warthog that's been rolling in the muck all day.'
"She was right, I often use my bike to go to work and so I started wearing them at work like ordinary boots - and other bikers coming to the factory shop would see them and we'd get talking and they'd ask me to make a pair for them...and I would...and that's how I started making Hogg boots."
