Boot is made on a special last made to your own key foot dimensions.
There are a small number of more extreme cases where, during the fitting assessment we conclude that custom fitting will not be suitable and the only way to achieve a fitting improvement is by CUSTOM MAKING. This would apply to less than ONE PERCENT of people who come to us for a specialist fitting!!
| THE MADETO MEASURE BOOT PROCESS |
| Step One |
Make an appointment for a fitting assessment by an Alt-berg Senior Bootfitter to be carried out at the Richmond factory |
| Step Two |
Bring your old boots, socks, footbeds etc. with you to the Factory. The Senior Bootfitter will do a written assessment. He will firstly look into the possibility of custom fitting standard boots. In only one percent of cases he will suggest that custom making is likely to be more successful. |
| Step Three |
The Bootfitter will take foot drawings and dimensions, indicating all that is required to custom make a boot and bootmaking last - the last will not necessarily be the same shape as the foot, but will fit the key foot dimensions (joint-toe depth etc.). |
| Step Four |
When the assessment and drawing are completed, the costs will be assessed and at this stage - especially if the costs are relatively high we will suggest you take at least one week to consider before going further. The Bootfitter will give you an assessment charge to pay - but you need go no further. |
| Step Five |
If you decide to proceed we will make a pair of boots, this will take at least six weeks. |
| Step Six |
When the boots are ready they will be fitted at the factory - by the senior boot fitter - the process is exactly the same now as custom boot fitting. The specially made boot will be 'fine tuned' and specialist footbeds may be fitted. |
| Step Seven |
At trying on in the factory shop the boots should achieve the level of improvement estimated during assessment - the boot should improve further as they 'wear in'. |
| Step Eight |
We keep all your details and drawings 'on file' in the factory. We do NOT necessarily keep the specially made last - after 3 months it may be 'stripped down' for reuse if required for another customer. |
NOTE:- WITH MADE TO MEASURE BOOTS, ONE FURTHER VISIT FOR 'FINE TUNING' MAY BE REQUIRED AND THIS VISIT IS NOT CHARGED FOR. ANY SUBSEQUENT VISIT AFTER THIS MAY BE SUBJECT TO EXTRA COSTS
| The following should be noted:- |
1. At an assessment you will be given a written report on a non-standard boot order form, or fitting assessment form
- A brief analysis of the foot/fitting history
- Details of proposed work of a non-standard nature to be carried out during manufacturing
- Anticipated work that may be required/customising at fitting when the boots are ready
- Details of footbeds required if they are non-standard
2. MAKE SURE YOU READ OUR TERMS & CONDITIONS ON THE BACK OF THE BOOT ORDER FORM - below are three of the main points
- Payment for the work we do of a non-standard nature during manufacture must be made in advance - along with the assessment & report charge - these charges are NON refundable
- Payment for outstanding amount & any footbeds/customising costs is made upon collection/fitting. The customising and footbed costs are NON refundable
- The boots themselves are subject to the normal statutory requirements with regard to quality of manufacture & materials and durability - however due to the more complex and extremely varied nature of the work we undertake on NON standard boots WE DO NOT offer any boot fitting guarantee.
| Over the years we have seen many thousands of people with boot fitting problems - we know from experience, that in spite of our best efforts, there will be occasions when the fitting is not successful. If a customer cannot accept this and our terms and conditions then they should NOT go ahead. |
95% of Alt-berg production is standard boots.
The "made to measure" service was started as a result of people with genuine fitting problems
visiting our factory or shop and asking if we could help them.
The service is offered on a goodwill 'at cost' basis - we do not make any significant profit from customising
or made to measure and where a fitting proves difficult requiring extended consultation and second or third
fittings then this service ends up being subsidised by our standard production.
The charges for customising, hand cutting, building a last or assessment are NON-RFUNDABLE.
Before we started to respond to requests for "made to measure" boots the main alternative was from
bespoke bootmakers. For example - It should be noted that the prices for bespoke footwear in London
start at around £850/pr and it is not unusual to pay up to £1500 for bespoke shoes or boots.
WE ARE NOT SURGICAL OR ORTHOPAEDIC BOOTMAKERS WHERE A PERSON HAS A FOOT PROBLEM RATHER THAN A
FITTING PROBLEM THEN THEY SHOULD CONSULT A FULLY QUALIFIED FOOT DOCTOR.
Our success rate for customising/made to measure boots is approximately 95%.
In many cases we can improve a fitting but not completely cure it. - We consider a 75%-80% improvement
to be a success. - We do NOT guarantee a 100% fitting improvement.
With all customised/made to measure boots it will be necessary to visit our shop or factory
at least twice - once to be assessed and a second time to be fitted. This normally works out satisfactorily.
On the very rare occasions where a fitting proves very problematic then up to two more visits
can be required.
When we are unable to resolve a fitting problem we refund the standard factory boot price where the boots are
"as new" and 70% of the factory price where the boots have been worn outside.(within 4 months). The
customising, made to measure, hand cutting, assessment, footbed, or other no standard charges
which reflect extra work carried out are NON-REFUNDABLE.
When you come to see us for fitting and assessment let the senior boot fitter know at the start
of the assessment if you have ANY medical condition eg:- Diabetes, Gout, Circulation Problems, foot or
joint swelling that may have a bearing on the fitting.
When you come to see us - always bring your old boots or shoes, socks and any orthotic inserts you may have
been using - it all helps to assess the fitting problem.
